How Ontario Grid calculates its numbers
We turn public reports from Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) into charts about electricity generation and prices. Here is what each chart means.
Where the data comes from
IESO makes hourly output and available capacity for larger, market participating generators public. It also publishes electricity prices by location: every five minutes in the real-time market and hourly in the day-ahead market. We collect these reports as they appear and keep earlier readings for the history charts.
The generator report covers facilities with at least 20 MW of maximum capability. Smaller generators, behind the meter production and imports may be absent, so the live total is reported generation rather than all electricity used in Ontario. Times on this site are Eastern Time.
Live grid supply ↗
We add each generator's latest reported hourly output, in megawatts (MW). Fuel shares divide a fuel's output by that reported total. The selected fuel reveals its units and each unit's output. Map pins use researched plant or nearby place coordinates, so some locations are approximate.
Daily energy mix ↗
For each fuel, we add its 24 hourly MW readings to estimate daily energy in megawatt-hours (MWh). A fuel's daily share is its MWh divided by all reported generators' MWh that day. Today's bar is partial until all hours arrive.
Hourly energy mix ↗
We group readings from the selected dates by hour of day, then average each fuel's output across days with that hour reported. The share view divides each fuel's average by the total average for that hour.
Capacity factor ↗
Daily capacity factor is energy generated divided by the energy a fuel group could make at its reference capacity for 24 hours. Each unit's reference is its highest reported available capacity in the previous 90 days. We add those references by fuel and leave out the unfinished day.
Unit output heatmap ↗
Each cell adds one unit's hourly output for that day, in MWh. Darker colour means more generation on the chosen colour scale. A blank means no report for that unit and day; zero means the unit reported no output.
Energy prices by type ↗
IESO reports real-time locational marginal prices (LMPs) in $/MWh. We average the five-minute prices within each hour for representative nodes at a station, then give each station equal weight in its fuel's price. Daily prices average the available hours. The system reference averages designated market buses.
Estimated generator revenue ↗
For each unit and hour, we multiply reported generation (MWh) by an hourly location price ($/MWh). Nuclear and hydro use IESO day-ahead LMP as a valuation assumption; other fuels use real-time LMP. If we cannot match a unit to a location price, we use the system reference price and mark it as a fallback.
We add hourly values for each complete day, then show the median daily value from the latest 30 complete days. Days missing needed output or price data are left out of that unit's median. The fleet figure is the median of daily fleet totals. Negative prices can make a day's estimate negative.
These are estimated gross energy values, not payments to generators. Contracts, uplift, capacity and other settlement payments are not included.
